The TQUK Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF) Qualification is to enable you to gain your recognised Higher Level Teaching Assistant qualification.
This qualification will enable you to apply for Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) positions within any school across the UK. It is fully Regulated by OFQUAL and is also OFSTED approved.

Units Covered
Unit 1 – Understand the Higher-Level Teaching Assistant Role
Learner Outcomes:
- Understand the functions of and requirements for being a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant
- Understand the requirements for continuing professional development specific to the role of the Higher-Level Teaching Assistant
- Understand how to work as a team and share effective practice with colleagues.
Unit 2 – Child development and welfare
Learner Outcomes:
- Understand the phases of child development.
- Be able to analyse the factors that affect children’s development.
- Understand the impact that parents and carers can have on the welfare and development of a child.
- Understand how support frameworks can influence the development and welfare of children and young people.
Unit 3 – Awareness of special educational needs
Learner Outcomes:
- Understand the special educational needs code of practice and disabilities legislation which relate to supporting learners.
- Understand the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion legislation and codes of practice.
- Understand how to support children and young people who have special educational needs.
- Understand the special educational requirements of learners with sensory and/or physical impairments.
- Understand how to provide support for children and young people with English as an additional language.
Unit 4 – Promoting positive behaviour in children and young people.
Learner Outcomes:
- Understand policies and procedures which promote positive behaviour in children and young people.
- Promote positive behaviours in children and young people.
- Address challenging and inappropriate behaviour from children and young people.
- Contribute to reviews of behaviour and behaviour management policies.
Unit 5 – Providing support for individual learners and small groups.
Learner Outcomes:
- Provide support for individual learners.

Unit 6 – Developing skills to promote positive working relationships.

- Be able to communicate with children, young people, colleagues, parents and carers.

Unit 7 – Curriculum planning, delivery, and assessment
Learner Outcomes:
- Plan and deliver lessons which meet the objectives and intended outcomes of learning activities designed for a range of age groups and abilities.
- Understand how to use ICT skills to support teaching and learning.
- Use a range of strategies to set learning objectives and monitor progress and attainment.
- Be able to monitor learners’ progress through maintaining and analysing records.
Entry Requirements
You must:
- Have reading and writing skills adequate to meet the requirements of the qualification and be able to complete the written assessments to a good standard.
- Be working in an appropriate school for a minimum of 12 hours per week or 50 hours over the duration of the qualification. This can include voluntary or unpaid work.
- Have a colleague who is willing to work in the capacity of an Expert Witness for you throughout the duration of the qualification, to complete the Observations and Expert Witness Testimonies. Your Expert Witness must hold either a Specialist HLTA qualification at Level 4, or a Teaching Qualification at a minimum of Level 4.
Assessments
Assessments are a great way of checking your progress allowing you to apply your learning to real-world situations. Through the TQUK Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF) Qualification, you will be assessed by a series of written assignments, which are submitted to and marked by your tutor along with classroom observations within your placement.
All assignments are set by TQUK. Upon verification of the activities, exercises and assignments, a certificate of achievement will be awarded by TQUK, as confirmation that your written work and your classroom observations have met all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for this qualification.
A work placement of at least 50 hours is required to complete this option. This workplace must be in a school setting. This can either be a primary, secondary or a special needs school however, you need to also ensure that the pupils you work with are aged 5+ and are studying at Key Stage 1 or above.
As part of this work placement, you must first ensure that a member of staff with occupational competence is able to provide supervision and sign the witness testimonies. This is to prove you have achieved the work-based learning outcomes of this course.
Please note: There is no examination required for this course.
Study Time
The guided study hours to complete your TQUK Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF) Qualification are an approximate figure and are dependent upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. You should allow enough time to complete assignments/ question papers to ensure satisfactory outcomes are met.
The approximate amount of time required to complete the TQUK Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF) Qualification is: 137 hours.
You will have an initial 12 months in which to complete this qualification.
