NCFE (Was CACHE) Awarding Body

Who are NCFE?

NCFE (Was known as CACHE) stands for the Northern Council for Further Education and we are the leading specialist Awarding Organisation for the Care and Education Sector. They were previously known as CACHE however they have now removed the CACHE branding from the qualification market and ALL CACHE qualifications will now be know as CACHE.

Our core business as an Awarding Organisation is the development of high quality vocational qualifications. We either write the syllabus based on the workforce development strategy for the sector, or develop them jointly with employers. We then develop the assessments which are used to determine if the learners have gained sufficient knowledge and skills from the course to be awarded the qualification.

In addition we work with trade unions, professional associations, Sector Skills Councils, (SSCs), and government departments to ensure all our qualifications are truly fit for purpose.

These qualifications are used by over 1000 Colleges and Training Providers in the UK and abroad.

Our Mission

To be the Awarding Organisation of choice in care, health and education for learners and employers.
To accomplish this we aim to improve the skills level and professional standards of the childcare, adult care, education and health care workforce and its allied disciplines. We also ensure our qualifications are cost effective to deliver, provide progression for learners, and value for employers.

Our History

CACHE, now known as the NCFE was set up in 1945 under the name of the National Nursery Examination Board (NNEB) by the Ministry of Health. The board set the syllabus for the first national examination which took place in 1947.

In 1994, the NNEB merged with the Council for Early Years Awards to form CACHE (Now known as the NCFE)Then, in 2001, we incorporated the National Association for Maternal and Child Welfare and Her Majesty the Queen became our patron.

In 2009, after demand from our Centres we started offering qualifications in adult care. In 2012, we used our expertise and quality from our Child Care and Social Care qualifications to launch four new health qualifications.

In the intervening years we have continually invested in high quality qualifications. Written and developed by experts, they have helped millions of learners to raise professional standards in the sector, earning us a reputation for excellence and leadership.
